Virgil van Dijk appears to drop emotional transfer hint before club announcement

Has Virgil van Dijk just dropped a surprise transfer hint? It's certainly seems that way.

The final game of the season is on Sunday and that means some incredibly difficult goodbyes. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson will both leave Liverpool, doing so as some of the greatest we've ever seen play for the club.

But they may not be alone in that. Virgil van Dijk has possibly hinted at that with an Instagram post on Saturday.

Van Dijk was saying goodbye to Salah and Robertson along with the rest of the squad and took the time for a photo with the pair. Only, he included both Joe Gomez and Alisson Becker, too.

"Thankful and grateful for our journey together! One more to go & a send off you deserve," he wrote.

Now, it's entirely possible that Van Dijk is merely getting the last of Jurgen Klopp's first great team together. They're the remaining stars from the 2019 UEFA Champions League win and the longest-serving players in the squad.

But it's also notable that both Gomez and Alisson are heavily linked with exits this summer. It's almost expected that they'll also say goodbye on Sunday as they enter the final years of their contracts.

Gomez nearly left last summer, only for the collapsed Marc Guehi deal to end any chance for him to leave. Alisson is constantly linked with a move to Juventus, who are eager to sign him in the summer.

A few ways to read this one, then. But as things stand, we imagine Van Dijk will be the last one of the group remaining come September.

Virgil van Dijk: Situation Summary

Liverpool Performance and Stats

As of 23 May 2026, Virgil van Dijk continues to lead Liverpool during a highly turbulent period under Arne Slot. Despite the club's defensive inconsistencies this season, the 34-year-old captain has been a consistent presence. He showed his enduring class on 15 May, scoring both goals for Liverpool in a damaging 4–2 defeat at Aston Villa.

Contract and Squad Leadership

Van Dijk's long-term future at Anfield remains secure, with his contract running until June 2027. Amid heavy dressing room unrest, the Dutchman has publicly taken on the mantle of leadership. Following Mohamed Salah’s explosive social media post and the confirmed summer departure of Andy Robertson, Van Dijk recently spoke out to praise his departing teammates, emphasizing the immense legacy they leave behind. He is fully expected to start in Sunday’s final match against Brentford.
