Former Sunderland, Arsenal and Hull City goalkeeper Vito Mannone has begun a UEFA coaching course with the Northern Irish FA. The retired 38-year-old is moving into the next phase of his career.
He is working towards the UEFA Goalkeeping A Licence. The player said in a social media post that he is officially a UEFA GK A candidate and enjoyed the first block in Ireland with fellow coaches and tutors.
Mannone remains a popular figure on Wearside after his 2013 to 2017 spell, when he established himself as a key presence.
Signed in 2013, he initially had to wait for his chance before claiming the number one shirt. He delivered standout displays, helping Sunderland reach the League Cup final and saving two penalties in the semi-final shootout win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
His impact was recognised when he won both the supporters’ and club player of the year awards in 2013-14. He later played a central part in the 2015-16 survival push under Sam Allardyce, keeping his place through a crucial run-in.
