Former Sunderland forward Wahbi Khazri is in the spotlight after Tunisia sacked head coach Sabri Lamouchi following their 5-1 World Cup defeat to Sweden.

The Tunisian football federation announced on Instagram on Monday that an agreement had been reached to dismiss Lamouchi, and that plans were under way to appoint Mondher Kebaier as interim head coach.

Khazri remains with the national team as part of the coaching staff. Lamouchi had been appointed in January and oversaw just five matches before his removal.

Pressure had built before the finals after a 5-0 friendly defeat to Belgium in Brussels. The 5-1 reverse to Sweden in their opening match then proved decisive.

Tunisia will try to steady themselves before facing Japan on Saturday at the same stadium in Guadalupe where they lost to Sweden. They will then complete their group against the Netherlands in Kansas City.

Khazri, 35, remains a memorable figure on Wearside after joining Sunderland in January 2016 during Sam Allardyce’s survival push. He scored in the 2-1 win over Manchester United with a free-kick past David de Gea, then supplied Lamine Kone’s late winner. He also netted a superb volley in the 3-2 victory against Chelsea in May 2016.
