Elye Wahi came on at half-time for Tiago Gouveia and helped Nice salvage a 1-1 draw against Strasbourg. Mike Penders’ display denied Claude Puel a winning return.
L'Équipe awarded Penders 7/10. Kojo Peprah Oppong was booked in the fourth minute, then conceded a penalty to Abdoul Ouattara early on. He was given 3/10. Penders also turned away Gouveia’s effort at 15 minutes while unsighted.
Promoted captain Morgan Sanson struggled against Strasbourg’s midfield. He lost dangerous balls and failed with a lob on 34 minutes. Sanson received 4/10.
Wahi registered five shots from 15 touches, the most in the match. Penders produced a big double stop around the hour, first beating Sanson then blocking Wahi, and saved another Wahi strike on 76 minutes.
Valentin Barco steered play and drove late breaks, almost scoring before Melvin Bard cleared on 77 minutes. Barco earned 6/10.
Ouattara was assured at right-back without the ball and stepped into midfield in possession, drawing the penalty. He was handed 6/10.
Gouveia offered little threat and was withdrawn at the break, taking 3/10.
