Wait until the final whistle – Judging this Newcastle United summer transfer window

How has this Newcastle United summer transfer window been for you?

A rhetorical question of course.

The answer from pretty much every Newcastle United fan would be pretty much the same.

The only difference would be exactly how bad it has gone, from not very good right through to end of the world levels of negativity.

All I would say is, wait for the final whistle.

Wait until 7pm on Monday 1 September 2025 and see what the final score is.

With 19 days to go, this Newcastle United summer transfer window has seen Jamal Lewis, Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff, Martin Dubrava and Odysseas Vlachodimos all move out.

None of those were seen as first eleven players for the new upcoming season, far from it.

When you add in the January departures of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly, I would say that is pretty outstanding business done by Newcastle United. None of the seven in Eddie Howe’s future plans, around £50m+ generated in transfer fees and a significant bite taken out of the wage bill.

Heading in

What we are really interested in.

Imagine if the Newcastle United summer transfer window ends with the following having arrived:

Anthony Elanga

Aaron Ramsdale

Malick Thiaw

Yoane Wissa

…and the Alexander Isak situation having concluded with the player reaching agreement with Eddie Howe and Newcastle United to start afresh, new contract, staying for sure the 2025/26 season, then see where we are all at in summer 2026?

Whilst the last month has been a mess with Isak, the reality is that as many others have pointed out, plenty of other players (Cabaye, Kane, Dyer etc etc) have tried to move to another club in a particular window, only for it not to happen. Then once the player(s) in question get back on the pitch, everybody just gets on with it.

The reality (as many others have pointed out) is that Liverpool have tried to get Isak on the cheap, messed him and Newcastle United around, no intention of putting a credible bid in, whilst even if Newcastle did sell him, who could they get now? Simple fact is that next summer Alexander Isak would have a number of clubs wanting to buy him and a choice to make, whilst Newcastle United would also have a choice of alternative strikers to go for.

Anyway, I digress.

Whatever you think about Isak, just imagine if he does stay and is part of the Newcastle United squad with those other five? Elanga, Ramsdale and Thiaw already signed, with Wissa and Ramsey now expected to join them in the near future.

Newcastle now with two England international goalkeepers to choose from.

The long awaited right-sided central defender (Malick Thiaw) now signed.

The long awaited right wing versatile attacking player (Elanga) signed.

Sean Longstaff replaced by Jacob Ramsey.

Callum Wilson replaced by Yoane Wissa.

What is there not to like about that?

Yes, Newcastle United have missed out on some transfer targets (though they haven’t seriously tried to get the majority of the targets claimed by the media).

However, at some point you also have to appreciate the quality of signings Newcastle United HAVE made.

If keeping Alexander Isak (and him playing of course…) and signing these four proven Premier League quality players, as well as German international defender Malick Thiaw, I think that is a seriously strengthened Newcastle United team and squad.
