Mohamed Ouahbi has been appointed Morocco head coach, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation announced on Thursday evening, with Walid Regragui stepping down three months before the North American World Cup.
Regragui confirmed his resignation during a ceremony broadcast on national television. He led Morocco to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, the first African nation to reach that stage, and said he leaves with loyalty and gratitude, convinced he served his country.
Ouahbi, 49, holds Belgian and Moroccan nationality and emerged as the natural successor after guiding Morocco’s U20s to the world title in October. He previously worked as an assistant at Anderlecht, building strong youth development credentials.
João Sacramento, formerly an assistant at PSG, Roma and Tottenham, will join Ouahbi’s staff to bring top-level international experience.
At his unveiling, Ouahbi said he understands the expectations, feels honoured, and will work with determination, humility and patriotism.
Morocco, ranked eighth by FIFA, open their 2026 campaign on 11 June in Group C against Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.
