Walsall fear an injury to Alex Pattison after the midfielder suffered a hamstring problem in the 1-0 pre-season loss at AFC Telford United.

He was introduced at half-time in Shropshire, then went down in discomfort just past the hour and could not continue. Ronan Maher replaced him and made his return from an elbow injury.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Lee Grant said it does not look good for the next week and that it appears to be a hamstring issue, although he stressed it is too early to tell, he will not guess and the player will be assessed over the next week or so.

Rico Browne was caught late soon after coming on and Sven Sprangler fell awkwardly in the second half. Both received treatment and continued, with Grant considering them contact knocks and expecting nothing more serious.

Pattison, 28, was hampered by fitness problems at Bradford City and missed three key games during Walsall’s League Two run-in last season. He joined from Bradford in January, making 19 appearances, scoring once and providing three assists.

James Connolly captained Walsall on his first appearance for the club. The Saddlers continue pre-season with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Luton Town on Wednesday.
