ExpressAndStar.com reports that Walsall have made six summer signings, yet Lee Grant accepts more work lies ahead. There have been five permanent additions plus Isaac Moore on loan, and all bar James Connolly featured in Saturday’s 0-0 at Leamington.

Goalkeeper Jed Ward debuted 24 hours after joining from Bristol Rovers on a three-year deal with a 12-month option, hinting he is first choice. A trialist was used ahead of Jenson Kilroy, while up front Dallas had a first-half effort ruled out and more firepower is still needed.

Aaron Pressley seeks a response after a testing debut year, and the club could pursue one permanent striker and perhaps a loan later in the window, as with Daniel Kanu and Nathan Lowe in recent summers.

Despite bringing in former Crewe Alexandra centre-back Connolly, the defence still needs help after the exits of Aden Flint and Evan Weir and the end of Kacper Lopata’s loan, so at least two more could be required. Full-backs look less urgent after Elicha Ahui featured and Mason Hancock competes with Vincent Harper, though Ahui’s 10-month ACL lay-off is a factor.

Out wide, 38-year-old Albert Adomah cannot be relied upon to start every game, so additions still look required despite Courtney Clarke’s cameo and Ronan Maher’s presence. In midfield, Sprangler looks the No six, Moore a box-to-box option and Simper could play as a No 10, with extra height from Moore at six ft one in and Sprangler at six ft.
