Birmingham City fans reminded Barcelona's Wojciech Szczęsny of his role in their EFL Cup final win over Arsenal in 2011.

Birmingham City played their final pre-season friendly ahead of the new season as they beat Barcelona on penalties in front of a packed St. Andrew’s crowd.

The visit of the Catalan giants has been a source of excitement for all connected to Blues, so there was a lot of anticipation ahead of the game, as Chris Davies’ side count down to the campaign starting with a League Cup tie at Swansea next week.

Whilst it was a very young Barcelona side, as the bulk of their squad continued to rest following the World Cup, it was an entertaining game, with Blues finding the net from August Priske and Jhon Solis in a 2-2 draw, before the hosts sealed the win on penalties.

Even though it was an inexperienced side from the Catalan outfit, with many stars of the future in their line-up, there were a few familiar faces in their XI.

Former Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen was in from the off, with new signing Karim Adeyemi another who was involved at St. Andrew’s.

But, it was Wojciech Szczęsny who attracted the most interest, as the Polish keeper is someone who is very well-known to Birmingham fans.

The ex-Arsenal man was in goal at Wembley as Blues memorably beat the Gunners to lift the League Cup in 2011, which is undoubtedly the best moment in the club’s modern history.

It was a forgettable afternoon for Szczęsny, as he was involved with a mix-up with Laurent Koscielny that allowed Obafemi Martins to score an 89th minute tap-in to ensure Blues lifted the cup.

Therefore, it’s perhaps no surprise that Blues fans were keen to remind the keeper of that moment, and footage was shared on social media of the home supporters singing the name of their match-winner from that day.

As well as that, the home support ironically cheered Szczęsny throughout the 62 minutes that he was on the pitch. To his credit, the 36-year-old appeared to take it in good spirits.

This was a good night for Birmingham for many reasons, as a friendly against a club like Barcelona is only going to raise the profile of the club, and the big crowd will have been appreciated by the money-men at St. Andrew’s.

Clearly, those that went to the game enjoyed themselves, and they were always going to ensure Szczęsny was reminded of what was a great day for Birmingham.

More importantly, though, this was a big test for Davies’ men as they prepare for the Championship opener against Sheffield United in two weeks time.

Even if it wasn’t near Barcelona’s best XI, they still had a lot of talent in the group, and the way they play is always the same in terms of trying to dominate possession, play with a high line, and always looking to attack.

So, it was a stern test for Blues, and the boss will be pleased with how his side adapted, and they look in decent shape ahead of the new season, even if the club will no doubt be in the market for a few more additions to strengthen the squad.
