Liverpool fan Jonathan Luke Poulter has called Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone ‘a coward’ following their altercation during Los Colchoneros’ 3-2 defeat on Wednesday night in the Champions League. Simeone lost his temper after Liverpool’s late winner, and sought out Poulter following a spray of insults.

Simeone admitted afterwards that he should have controlled himself, but also explained that players and managers are in a position where they are unable to respond to a barrage of insults. El Cholo has in the past commented on Thibaut Courtois’ behaviour that players and staff should not provoke the crowd, and some of his staff were seen celebrating in the direction of the stands after Marcos Llorente’s equaliser.

Poulter took to social media, calling Simeone a coward for not clearing up that there was no racial aspect to his taunting and insults during his press conference, before doing so himself.

He then goes on to cite the fact that one of Simeone’s staff appears to spit in the direction of the fans during the fracas with Simeone. Poulter also commented in a humorous tone asking whether he ‘got an assist’ for Simeone’s red card.

Atletico Madrid nutrionist appears to spit at Liverpool fans

As shown in various videos, Atletico nutritionist David Lagos leaves the initial scene of the altercation, but then returns. Lagos, who has been at the club for eight years, then appears to spit at the stands, as highlighted by Caught Offside. Simeone and Atletico are yet to comment on the incident.

Poulter has history of football ban

Poulter, at the time 20, has previously been banned from attending games for three hours, and given a curfew between 21:30 and 06:00, as a report from The Mirror details. The ban was handed out in 2015 following a court case, after he was asked to move a banner so a wheelchair user could see the game, also at Anfield.

“F***ing piss off,” Poulter told the husband of said wheelchair user, continuing “This is the Kop, this is our tradition, this is what we do, if you don’t like it there’s the door you can f*** off.” He was also previously cautioned by police for attempting to bring smoke pellets into a football match.
