Watford are closing in on the permanent signing of Nestory Irankunda from German giants Bayern Munich.
Watford are set to sign Bayern Munich youngster Nestory Irankunda in a €4m deal.
The 19-year-old, who can play in various attacking positions, made his name as one of the most exciting talents of his age when he broke through at Adelaide United in the A-League at just 16.
Over the next few years, he would impress in Australia, with Bayern Munich seeing enough to bring Irankunda to Europe in the summer of 2024.
Understandably, the teenager is way down the pecking order at the Allianz Arena, so he spent the second half of last season on loan in Switzerland with Grasshoppers as he waits for his debut in Munich.
And, it seems another move is on the cards for Irankunda, as journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Watford are set to bring the winger to England.
He explained that the Hornets are going to pay an initial €4m for Irankunda, with Bayern Munich inserting a 50% sell-on as part of the agreement. Furthermore, the Bundesliga champions will have a buy-back clause as part of the agreement, although that figure wasn't disclosed.
Romano added that Irankunda has already agreed personal terms with Watford, as he is set to sign a four-year contract.
It has been a hectic summer already for Watford, with the most notable change coming in the dugout as Paulo Pezzolano was named as Tom Cleverley’s successor.
That was a move that didn’t go down well, but, to their credit, it seems the owners are ready to back the new boss, as several new faces are through the door already.
There is a clear shift in the transfer policy too, with Watford targeting young players who are determined to prove themselves, and Irankunda falls into that category as well.
Clearly, the fact he has been picked up by Bayern Munich shows he has talent, and it’s worth noting he has won five caps for Australia already despite his age.
So, he will give Pezzolano another option in attack, and Irankunda is someone who could be utilised down either flank, and central if necessary, but his best work comes out wide thanks to his incredible speed.
There are areas of his game that can be developed, but Watford will hope that he can kick-on at the club, and if Irankunda starts to fulfil his potential at Vicarage Road, they could have a serious player on their hands, which is why Bayern Munich have felt the need to protect themselves with this deal by including a sell-on and a buy-back clause.
