The Blues have gone 21 games without defeat in the competition this season. Liverpool are all that now stands in Chelsea’s way as they look to end the campaign as invincibles.
When speaking to the media ahead of the match, Chelsea boss Bompastor highlighted the importance of her side remaining professional until the final whistle blows.
“We want to stay unbeaten in the league,” Bompastor said. “We are champions and we are really happy with that but we have the opportunity to make history in being invincible this season.
“We just have to make sure for the last game, especially in-front of our fans at Stamford Bridge, we fight for the win and the three points. We will go into the game with this mentality.
“Being champions, we could have done it differently and let the last two games go but that’s not possible for us, we want to stay professional and fight until the end.”
Going on to discuss the prospect of being unbeaten further, Bompastor acknowledged the unique nature of the achievement and said that Chelsea have the opportunity to write their name in footballing history.
She said “It’d mean a lot because it’ll probably be the only time in my career to be in that situation [to go unbeaten]. When a team’s been able to achieve that in the women’s or men’s game, they stay in history. I think of the Arsenal men’s team when they were invincible, you always talk about it.
“When you’re that close and have the opportunity to make history, you have to make sure you do that because it will stay forever. For your kids to be able to tell the story later in life, it would be nice.”
Chelsea were pushed to the limit when they last met Liverpool in an Adobe Women’s FA Cup semi-final tie a month ago. The Blues were given a scare before running out 2-1 winners. Bompastor expects the Merseysiders to be motivated to do well again.
She said “I expect Liverpool to come and be hugely motivated. They could finish in fifth in the league or as low as ninth which is a big difference. If I was their players or manager, I’d be hugely motivated to go into the game and make sure I get the three points. We are aware of that and we want to finish with a win also, so it’ll be a good game.
“As you could see when we played them in the FA Cup semi-final, they gave us a big challenge. The first half was probably not what we wanted, especially because they were able to score but the second half was a lot better. We need to play like we did in the second half against them.”
Chelsea’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Liverpool kicks-off at 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
