West Brom have been told to make Michael Carrick their next manager following the Baggies’ decision to part ways with Ryan Mason.

Albion have suffered a torrid 2025/26 campaign, languishing 18th in the Championship standings after 26 matches, just seven points clear of the relegation zone.

What will make West Brom’s poor showing even more painful for supporters is the open nature of this season’s Championship, as clubs relegated from the Premier League have failed to challenge at the top of the division.

This opportunity has been jumped upon by the likes of Preston North End, Coventry City and Middlesbrough, whilst the Baggies have spent most of their time in the bottom half of the table.

A run of ten away losses in a row has seen the Black Country outfit fail to make much progress up the division, highlighting the lack of experience inside their dugout.

After a 2-1 defeat against Leicester City, the higher-ups at the Hawthorns decided that time was up for Mason, who had been appointed as Albion boss in the summer of 2025, representing his maiden full-time job in first-team management.

Following Mason’s departure, West Brom now find themselves in the unenviable position of appointing a new manager during one of the busiest periods in the Championship calendar.

Sides such as Middlesbrough and Watford have benefitted from managerial changes this term, able to pull off the transition smoothly. However, repeating that success is easier said than done, adding more weight to the Baggies decision over who they appoint next.

With a number of former second-tier bosses out of work, Football League World’s West Brom fan pundit, Callum Burgess, believes that there is one clear name Albion should be looking at to replace Mason.

“The obvious choice would be Michael Carrick,” stated Callum. “I think that he'd be a really great option.

“I think that Albion need a manager who's got the potential to have both an immediate short-term impact like he proved at Middlesbrough, when he initially came in he took him on that incredible run which ended in the play-offs, and one that can also help develop young players.

“He implemented a clear style of play at Middlesbrough on a long-term basis, although he did fail to get him into the play-offs after his first season in charge there.

“He'll need to be backed with players with more technical ability than what we possess at the minute because I think that that's an area which we're quite below par.

“If any manager is going to be successful at Albion, they definitely need some more talented players.”

Michael Carrick would have the necessary experience for West Brom job

When Carrick arrived at the Riverside to take over Middlesbrough in 2021, they found themselves languishing towards the bottom of the table.

This almost perfectly replicates West Brom’s current situation, which provides the former Manchester United midfielder with the perfect experience to take over.

During his first term with Boro, Carrick managed to guide the North East outfit to a play-off finish, despite them sitting so far down the division when he came in.

Repeating that achievement with West Brom may be difficult, but he certainly has the credentials that the Black Country outfit will be looking for.

The ex-Manchester United midfielder, who begun his coaching career at Old Trafford, perhaps flattered to deceive thereafter, although with a shortage of top-end, readily available candidates lingering around the Championship appointment market right now, he may indeed represent the best option for the Baggies.
