West Ham will be without Crysencio Summerville for at least one match after a calf injury ruled the winger out of Saturday’s visit of Manchester City.

As reported by yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the former Leeds man suffered the problem during last weekend’s penalty-shootout win over Brentford. He came on at half-time, played through the issue and did not take a spot-kick. Initial post-match concern was followed by conflicting suggestions over severity.

Nuno Espirito Santo said on Thursday that Summerville will miss City and will be assessed day by day, with no return date offered. He did not indicate a lengthy lay-off.

The head coach described it as a calf issue and noted the winger’s impact after coming on, including staying on through extra time to help the team. Summerville has scored seven in his last 11 outings across all competitions, a burst that has accompanied West Ham’s recent uptick in the relegation fight.

After City, there is a full week before a trip to Aston Villa, giving the Dutchman a chance to prove fitness. He had been in line for a first Netherlands call-up for the March international break, which he now risks missing.

Following that two-week pause, West Ham host Leeds in an FA Cup quarter-final at the start of April, before the clubs meet again on the Premier League’s final weekend. That late-May game has been viewed as a potential relegation decider, although Leeds are currently three points above the 18th-placed Hammers with a superior goal difference.
