West Ham suffered a fresh injury concern as Jean-Clair Todibo withdrew during the warm-up at Aston Villa, clouding preparations for Leeds United’s FA Cup quarter-final and the relegation fight.
The Hammers lost 2-0 at Villa Park, John McGinn scoring before the break and Ollie Watkins after half-time. The result left Nuno Espirito Santo’s side 18th, four points behind 15th-placed Leeds, who drew 0-0 with Brentford.
After a passing drill he pointed to his calf and spoke with medical staff. Signed permanently last summer for £33m, he had been set to start in a back three with Axel Disasi and Konstantinos Mavropanos, before Freddie Potts came in and West Ham switched to a back four.
Todibo has impressed in recent weeks and, if the 26-year-old has a calf issue, he could be a major doubt to face Leeds in two weeks. Winger Crysencio Summerville is also out with a calf injury, missing West Ham’s last two games and his first Netherlands call-up, and he is a doubt to face his former club.
The loss was only West Ham’s second in seven league games but arrived at a bad time. “It is not good to go into the international break with this feeling,” he told Sky Sports.
He added: “It is a moment to reflect and realise we have to do much better. I think the fans today felt disappointed with us, and that is what hurts the most.” West Ham host Leeds at the London Stadium in two weeks, then resume league action at home to Wolves a week later.
