QPR defender Amadou Mbengue has taken to social media to share a message with supporters after his red card in the dramatic late defeat to Wrexham.

Queens Park Rangers defender Amadou Mbengue has taken to social media to apologise to supporters after his red card in the dramatic 3-2 defeat to Wrexham at Loftus Road on Saturday.

In what proved to be an eventful clash between two of the Championship play-off hopefuls, Harvey Vale gave QPR the lead in the sixth minute with a delightful volley, and they maintained their advantage until the break.

Wrexham equalised in the 54th minute through Callum Doyle after the hosts failed to clear their lines defensively, but it looked as though the R's had secured all three points when Steve Cook headed home from Nicolas Madsen's corner with just ten minutes remaining.

However, QPR went down to 10 men in the 90th minute when Mbengue received a second yellow card for a rash challenge on George Thomason, and the Red Dragons sensationally turned the game around in stoppage time, with goals from Josh Windass and Oliver Rathbone sealing a remarkable comeback victory for the Welsh outfit.

While Wrexham moved into the play-off places after their late heroics, the Hoops are now without a win in their last three games, and they currently sit 12th in the table, four points behind Phil Parkinson's sixth-placed side.

Mbengue's red card may have been a turning point in the game, but QPR head coach Julien Stephan refused to blame the defender for his side's late collapse, instead insisting they should have been more clinical with their chances to put the game to bed.

"To finish the game with 10 players in the last minute had a huge impact, I think, at the end of the game," Stephan told West London Sport.

"But I don’t want to analyse the game only of the last five or six minutes. We need to have a full analysis of the game.

"We were very dominant in the first half and with more efficiency it (would have been) 2-0 for us.

"With another goal in the first half it could have been a different second half. That’s why we need to have a full analysis of the game."

However, while his manager was publicly supportive of him, Mbengue apologised to R's supporters on social media for his red card, admitting that his reckless actions cost his team a potentially crucial three points.

"I wanted to apologise to the QPR fans for my mistake in today's match," Mbengue wrote on his Instagram story.

"I cost my team a possible victory and I want to acknowledge the effort the players put in.

"I give my soul to every game I play for this badge!"

After his dismissal against Wrexham, Mbengue will be suspended when QPR welcome league leaders Coventry City to Loftus Road on Saturday, but in his absence, Stephan's men will be looking to get revenge on the Sky Blues following their humiliating 7-1 defeat at the CBS Arena in August.

Amadou Mbengue must improve one QPR factor after costly Wrexham actions

Mbengue has impressed for QPR this season since his summer move from Reading, and he has performed well in an unfamiliar right-back role in recent months, so, like Stephan, supporters will not be too harsh on him after his mistake against Wrexham.

It could be argued that, despite their numerical disadvantage, the R's should still have been able to see out the closing stages of the game instead of conceding two stoppage-time goals, but there is no doubt that Mbengue's unnecessary challenge on Thomason that earned him a second yellow card put his side in a difficult position.

While it was Mbengue's first red card of the season, the defender has received nine yellow cards in all competitions, so if he is to fulfil his potential and become a top defender at Championship level, he will certainly need to improve his discipline.
