Women’s FA Cup holders Chelsea got their defence of the trophy under way with a 5-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace in the fourth round on Saturday.

And midfielder Erin Cuthbert said afterwards that she was proud of the team’s ruthlessness.

“I’m proud of our resilience in terms of how we kept our foot on the gas after the first and second goals,” she said to the club’s official website.

“In times gone by, we might have dropped off a little bit and let teams back in the game. Everyone was so positive, and we were encouraging each other. We wanted each other to take chances and score goals.”

The goals came from all over the pitch as well, with efforts from Millie Bright, Sam Kerr (2), Guro Reiten from the penalty spot, and Alyssa Thompson.

And Cuthbert also enthused about the Blues’ strength in depth, saying: “Our depth is really important. We had a few different goalscorers and assist makers and we’re going to need everyone throughout the season. We’re coming into a busy period, so it’s now about everybody pulling in the right direction.

“Every time you get minutes on the pitch, it’s about trying to get that starting spot. So, without a doubt, it’s important for competing on all fronts at the moment.”

Chelsea have prepared well for big games – head coach Sonia Bompastor

Head coach Sonia Bompastor agreed with Cuthbert’s assessment, saying after the match that she felt the win was a good way to prepare for a Subway Women’s League Cup semi-final against Manchester City followed by a London derby against perennial rivals Arsenal in the Women’s Super League next weekend.

“We were able to score with different players in different ways today, and we didn’t concede any goals,” she said. “We were strong today and strong against West Ham. There are a lot of positive things we can take from these two games going into the next three.”
