Plymouth Argyle are set to lose Adam Randell to Bristol City

Tom Cleverley has opened up on what Wayne Rooney has told him about Plymouth Argyle midfielder Adam Randell amid impending Bristol City move.

It was reported by Football Insider earlier this week that the 24-year-old is closing in on a move to the Robins for next season.

Randell has one year remaining on his deal at Home Park, but it is thought that City have triggered his release clause which has seen them close in on his services.

Bristol City missed out on promotion last season with a play-off semi-final defeat, with manager Liam Manning jumping ship to Norwich City as a result.

New manager Gerhard Struber will now be hoping to shape the squad to his liking, with Randell set to become their latest summer signing, after Yu Hirakawa.

New Plymouth manager Cleverley has revealed that Rooney spoke to him about the midfielder during the time of their second round EFL Cup tie.

Bristol City supporters will be excited by the judgement made by the former England international, with the 35-year-old all but confirming the player’s exit from Home Park.

"He's a player that I really admire," said Cleverley, via Plymouth Live.

"When we played Plymouth in the cup last year, Wayne spoke really highly of him, and being a midfielder myself he's someone who I have paid a lot of attention to over the last 10 months.

“I'm disappointed I'm not able to work with him but never stand in the way of anyone wanting to play at the top level."

With the Robins coming so close to Premier League promotion last season, supporters will be keen to see the club improve the first team squad to help close that gap.

Signing someone like Randell could help achieve that goal, and Cleverley’s comments suggest he will be sorry to not get the chance to work with the player.

This is an exciting prospect for the Robins, who already have a wealth of talent in the middle of the park, which includes Max Bird and Jason Kngiht.

During Rooney’s time in charge of Plymouth, he also spoke publicly of his admiration for Randell.

Following the midfielder’s goal in the side’s 1-1 draw with Derby County back in November 2024, he predicted that the player would go on to become club captain for the Pilgrims.

"He's Plymouth Argyle's future captain,” said Rooney, late last year, via Plymouth Live.

“I think he has got the right temperament, the right mindset.

"He's a local lad which is always important as well.

“Everything he has got as a player is what I like so, of course, in my opinion he's a future captain for the club."

This will also be exciting for Bristol City fans to hear, with the team set to sign someone with strong leadership qualities that impressed someone of Rooney’s calibre.

This could prove a very shrewd signing, if the player is able to live up to the expectations set by both Rooney and Cleverley.

Struber will be hopeful that the midfielder can make an immediate impact and become a key part of the side this season.
