The Saints' second win of the season came in a dramatic clash at Bramall Lane
Southampton manager Will Still issued an honest reaction to Sheffield United's controversially ruled out equaliser against his side on Tuesday night at Bramall Lane.
The midweek clash in the Steel City was viewed as a pivotal encounter for both the Blades and the Saints, with the two sides expected to be in and among the promotion conversation come the end of the season starting their respective terms in extremely sluggish fashion.
However, it was the South Coast side who would come out on top and earn their first Championship success since the opening day of the season, with Ross Stewart's seven-minute brace early in the second half cancelling out Tyrese Campbell's 28th-minute opener for Chris Wilder's men.
That was only a slice of the drama which unfolded though, with Wilder shown a red card by Adam Herczeg at half-time after launching a ball into the stands out of sheer frustration, before the Blades thought they'd salvaged a dramatic equaliser in the dying embers, with the man in the middle ruling out Sydie Peck's header for a foul, largely to the bemusement of the masses in South Yorkshire.
It was a pivotal moment that ensured that Still's men returned to winning ways in the league for the first time in eight games though, and whilst the 32-year-old largely focused on the performance of his side, particularly after going a goal behind, he admitted that he was personally none the wiser as to how the home side were denied a last-gasp leveller.
With the Blades desperate to salvage a point after seeing their early advantage wiped out by Stewart despite Adam Armstrong's missed penalty in the latter minutes of the first half, a last-minute corner presented them with a chance to do just that.
Gustavo Hamer's in-swinging set-piece evaded many Blades and Saints players inside the box, leaving Peck to nod the ball home at the far post, although scenes of bedlam in the home quarters were silenced just seconds later.
The aforementioned Herczeg would swiftly award the visitors a free kick as United substitute, Tom Cannon, was adjudged to have fouled the experienced Alex McCarthy as the ball eventually found its way to Peck after curling past several bodies.
Unsurprisingly, the decision has caused plenty of debate, as well as anger from those of a Blades persuasion, whilst Still admitted post-match that he was yet to view the incident back.
"I don't know, I haven't seen it, honestly. I asked what happened, and the official said he got his arms around Alex [McCarthy], and he's pretty big," he stated.
"I'm guessing that he must have kind of got hold of him, but I don't know, I've not seen it."
Meanwhile, United assistant boss, Alan Knill, was equally unsure as to what the referee spotted whilst being visibly frustrated with his individual performance when it came to several decisions.
"For the corner, there's hardly any contact; Tom Cannon around the goalkeeper. I think he misses it. I think he goes for the ball and misses it, and obviously Sydie heads it in," Knill said.
It has been a tale of frustration for at least 90 percent of the campaign for Sheffield United, and the aforementioned decision will sum up the campaign thus far from their point of view.
An encounter with a Saints side out-of-form themselves was viewed as the ideal situation to build on their 1-0 success at Oxford United last weekend, although the same old defensive issues eventually came to light in S2 as Stewart completed a dramatically swift turnaround.
As for Southampton, they are unlikely to give many thoughts on the incident as securing the three points has eased the early-season pressure on Still as his side look to use the result as a springboard and gain some much-needed momentum ahead of another away trip to Derby County this weekend.
