The Reds face The Gunners at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening, The fixture comes less than a fortnight after Liverpool knocked Arsenal out of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup with a 1-0 victory in Borehamwood.

“We expect an improved Arsenal from the FA Cup game,” Whiteley said. “They will have been disappointed with their performance.

“We need to be prepared to up our levels on Saturday. I think it’s about refining and going into the real detail from what happened in that game both the good things and the things that we need to be better at.”

There is a gap between Liverpool and the Barclays Women’s Super League’s elite when it comes to rankings, however, Whiteley says that her side have already proved that they can beat the best on their day.

She said “We have shown in the last couple of weeks that we can compete with the top-four. I can’t comment on it too much having picked up the team half-way through the season but we are in a place where we can cause any team in the league problems. We are in a good spot on that front.”

Whiteley has put her name forward to land the Liverpool job on a permanent basis but for now, she remains focused on the task at hand.

She said “Everyone has been absolutely brilliant, both the staff and the players. The effort and the application has been so good. The support from within this building and across the wider club has been fantastic too and I am so grateful for that support, it has made a real difference to me. It has put me in the best position to lead this team forward in the interim.

“I have always been quite open about wanting the position because it’s a role that I will move into in the future, that’s where my skillset lies but the focus has got to be on Arsenal.”

Liverpool’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Arsenal kicks-off at 5.30pm on Saturday evening.
