Valencia face a right-back crisis, with poor form worsened by serious injuries to Dimitri Foulquier and Rubén Iranzo and recurring problems for Thierry Rendall. According to Superdeporte, Rendall left Wednesday’s training with discomfort, leaving the flank short.
Carlos Corberán could redeploy Unai Núñez there or turn to the academy, something he has not done in the past year.
At Paterna, cover had centred on Iranzo and Miguel Monferrer. With Iranzo out, the Castellón-born defender is now the leading academy option on the right, less than a year after fronting one of the best Juvenil A sides in years. He also has minor niggles.
From the 2006 cohort, Monferrer is robust and combative, strongest defensively. He will join attacks when required but is steadier behind, offering balance while Rubi on the left pushed for depth.
In Óscar Sánchez’s team that went close to the Copa de Campeones and European qualification, he often moved into inside channels in build-up to free David Otorbi’s lane.
With the B team this season he has played 19 matches, over 75 per cent of the minutes, and performed well. Valencia may not be ideal for debuts now, but beyond the derby the shortage could force Corberán to use a B-team option, with Monferrer first in line.
