Dan Neil has completed his move to Rangers, signing a three-year contract, and Jermain Defoe says he urged the midfielder to take the opportunity.
"Dan Neil called me the other day and asked if he could have two minutes of my time to speak about Rangers. And before he even spoke, I said: 'Dan, you have got to go, honestly.'"
He told Sky Sports.
"You are a young player, and if you get a chance to go to Rangers at this stage of your career and play in front of some of the best fans I have experienced, you have to go. If you want a challenge, you have to go. For Rangers, they are signing a top player. The demand up there is to run around, work hard, and give everything for that shirt. But you have to win as well."
After the announcement, Neil said he had also turned to Graeme Murty and Ross Stewart for guidance, with both speaking highly of the club and Glasgow.
He considered interest from top Championship sides but felt Rangers matched the characteristics he wanted, from the scale of the club to the chance to fight for trophies.
Neil believes the expectation to win every week mirrors what he has known at Sunderland, and that such pressure drives him to give 110 per cent.
