The LA Galaxy announced the signing of free-agent goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski in a strategic move to bolster their roster for the 2025 season. At 27, Marcinkowski joins on a contract through 2026, with an option for 2027. The former U.S. youth national team player brings experience and stability to a crucial position, becoming another important piece for a team looking to make itself a staple in MLS and international competitions.

Having come through the youth ranks of the San Jose Earthquakes, Marcinkowski spent seven seasons with the club, making 95 regular-season appearances and earning 18 clean sheets. During his time there, he regularly battled the Galaxy in the high-intensity Cali Clásico showdowns, which no doubt sharpened his nerves of steel.

The addition of Marcinkowski adds internal competition for the goalkeeper position alongside John McCarthy and Novak Mićović. Healthy competition in training can raise the level of all goalkeepers, an important piece for a team with ambitions to make a run in both the MLS Cup and the Concacaf Champions Cup.

As Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz pointed out, "JT has a wealth of MLS experience, much of it coming from competing against the Galaxy in multiple Cali Clásico matchups. He will provide valuable competition and depth to the goalkeeper position as we embark on this next campaign."

Marcinkowski's experience in the MLS, particularly those high-intensity matches like the Cali Clásico, might prove to be the difference maker in critical junctures.

Why Galaxy is betting on Marcinkowski now

The Galaxy are expecting big things in 2025 with their Concacaf Champions Cup debut in March and the MLS regular-season opener against expansion team San Diego FC in February. They need to be competitive and deep. Signing Marcinkowski now allows the Galaxy to fill a critical role with an experienced player still in his prime, capable of offering stability in big situations.

Galaxy also want balance within the roster. That competition at the goalkeeper position is big for them to have. Each of McCarthy, Mićović, and Marcinkowski brings something different to the table, creating a healthy dynamic where all the players know they need to be on their toes for game time. This improves not only individual contributions but also the overall quality of the team.

The importance of a reliable goalkeeper

In soccer, the goalkeeper is considered the backbone of the team. It's a role that requires technical skill, leadership, toughness, and quick decisions in seconds.

While Marcinkowski comes in with a group of goalkeepers, he will get the chance to prove himself in training and games. His experience in MLS mixed with the determination to make it big in new surroundings makes him a strong contender to make a serious contribution.
