Sunderland hold an option to make Lutsharel Geertruida’s RB Leipzig loan permanent this summer, yet activating it is now seen as highly unlikely.

Sky Sports Germany reports that he will return to Leipzig before likely moving permanently elsewhere. The stance remains that no final decision will be taken until after the campaign, and the loan runs into the summer.

After weeks out, he delivered a standout display against Manchester United, narrowly missing a second half effort that might have made him the matchwinner.

The loan has been a success, with 28 appearances across competitions and reliable shifts in several roles, adding experience and quality to the squad.

His best positions are right back or right centre back, but Nordi Mukiele has excelled at right back and Dan Ballard, tied to a new long-term deal, anchors right centre back.

Squad priorities also point left, with Omar Alderete and Reinildo outstanding but Dennis Cirkin out of contract this summer and depth thin. Trai Hume offers further cover on the right and has played the most Premier League outfield minutes for Sunderland this season.

Geertruida turns 26 this summer and retains major international ambitions, so regular starts will matter. A fee around £20 million would also take a significant slice of the summer budget.

Opting against the clause carries risk, losing a clear Premier League level player with no guarantee of matching value. For now, it is too soon to draw a line under his spell, and last weekend’s display should keep him in for the final two games, which could yet prompt a rethink. Most likely, though, he departs as the first major transfer call of the summer, as Flo Ghisolfi’s strengthened recruitment team continue window preparations.
