This Newcastle United team has worked wonders with the invaluable help of Eddie Howe.
Against the odds, United finding themselves fourth in the Premier League with three matches remaining.
The Newcastle United team having already delivered the League Cup at Wembley seven weeks ago.
All of this achieved despite so many rival clubs spending far more on assembling their squads and having far bigger wage bills.
This Newcastle United team doesn’t win every match of course, however, one thing we do know.
You can never doubt the character and resilience of this Newcastle United team.
Sunday was yet another example of this.
One-time Brighton striker Warren Aspinall declared ahead of the match that Newcastle United would easily ‘crumble’ on Sunday if going behind to the Seagulls, Aspinall claiming that NUFC had shown this weakness previously this season.
This is what has actually regularly happened when Newcastle United have gone behind this season in Premier League matches…
Bournemouth 1 Newcastle 1
Wolves 1 Newcastle 2
Newcastle 1 Man City 1
Forest 1 Newcastle 3
Newcastle 3 Liverpool 3
Spurs 1 Newcastle 2
Southampton 1 Newcastle 3
Newcastle 4 Forest 3
Brighton 1 Newcastle 1
Not too bad for a team that easily ‘crumbles’ if going behind!
Looking at those nine matches, Newcastle United have came back after going behind to pick up 19 points after having been in losing positions.
What I think is especially impressive, is that six of those nine games and 14 points that have been secured after having been in losing positions, have been achieved by this Newcastle United team away from home.
As Sunday showed, this United side will keep going until the very last, with indeed Newcastle the ones trying the hardest to win the game once they levelled, not the home side. If only that Wilson shot in added time hadn’t brought out a quality save from the Brighton keeper.
Also worth pointing out that when Newcastle United get into a winning position in the Premier League, they have only dropped seven points all season! This is the least of any PL team.
