The speculation surrounding Nico Schlotterbeck’s possible transfer to FC Bayern continues to generate discussion. Now one of the most prominent voices in German soccer, Lothar Matthäus, has weighed in – and given the BVB defender a clear recommendation
Transfers between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern have traditionally been particularly explosive. Names such as Mario Götze, Robert Lewandowski and Mats Hummels are still closely associated with this sensitive transfer route. Nico Schlotterbeck could now be the next big name to follow – at least in theory. The centre-back has so far been hesitant to extend his contract with BVB, while interest from Munich continues to be present
Lothar Matthäus commented clearly on this constellation in the Sky90 programme. The record international first made it clear that Schlotterbeck is undisputedly one of the best central defenders we have in Germany in sporting terms. „This is already one of the best central defenders we have in Germany,“ said Matthäus. At the same time, however, he made it unmistakably clear that a move to Bayern would not be a foregone conclusion for the 26-year-old

For Matthäus, everything depends on the future of Dayot Upamecano. Should FC Bayern keep the Frenchman and at the same time plan to keep Jonathan Tah, the 64-year-old sees little room for Schlotterbeck to develop. „If Upamecano stays – with Tah – then it will be very difficult for Nico Schlotterbeck to become a regular at Bayern,“ explained Matthäus. In this case, the Dortmund player would initially „take a back seat“ at the record champions
It is remarkable that Matthäus openly questioned why Schlotterbeck has not yet made a clear commitment to BVB. He suspects that the international may be waiting for other options – for example from England. However, Matthäus is against Bayern for a move to Munich under clearly defined conditions
„If Bayern Munich can cope with Upamecano, then I wouldn’t necessarily advise Nico to go to Bayern Munich,“ Matthäus continued, adding that Schlotterbeck has a permanent role in Dortmund and is a fixture on the pitch – a status that he would by no means be guaranteed in Munich
Reading between the lines, it is clear that Matthäus currently sees Upamecano and Tah as the stronger and more consistent solution for FC Bayern. For Schlotterbeck, a move to Säbener Straße would therefore not only be a prestige transfer, but also a sporting risk. This is precisely what the Sky expert warns against.
