Manchester City will enter tomorrow night’s match against Galatasaray with several attacking players unavailable. Antoine Semenyo is ineligible to play in the Champions League. Savinho and Oscar Bobb are injured and unavailable for the match. That leaves Erling Haaland, Omar Marmoush, Jeremy Doku, Rayan Cherki, and Phil Foden who can play on the wings or up front against Galatasaray. Looking at Pep Guardiola’s options, perhaps tomorrow night at the Etihad is the ideal opportunity to start Haaland and Marmoush. Haaland’s and Marmoush’s games complement each other, and if they play together, it could help City unlock Galatasaray’s defence.
The idea of Haaland and Marmoush starting together is always full of possibility. Looking at their games, they do complement each other. Marmoush’s ability to make late and intelligent runs into an opponent’s penalty area looks well-suited to playing off Erling Haaland. Haaland at his best, with his sheer presence, draws defenders to him. That creates space for a player like Marmoush to thrive, especially if the Egyptian international plays just behind Haaland as a shadow striker, so to speak. That idea would give City a combination up front that would give Galatasaray a headache to contend with. The idea of Haaland and Marmoush playing together tomorrow night does have merit, but it is entirely dependent on how Pep Guardiola decides to set his team up in a must-win match.
Typically this season, Omar Marmoush hasn’t played on the left-wing or the right. Pep Guardiola sees the Egyptian international as a striker. Jeremy Doku has made the left-wing spot his own this season. Usually, Guardiola employs Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden as dual number tens this season. Does Guardiola sacrifice one of Foden or Cherki to start Marmoush? Perhaps not. The other question is: Is Jeremy Doku fit enough to start against Galatasaray? The Belgian international copped a nasty challenge from Diogo Dalot in City’s Manchester derby defeat. He also copped another one late in Manchester City’s win over Wolves on Saturday. Perhaps Doku’s spot is where Marmoush could fit into Manchester City’s starting lineup at the Etihad against Galatasaray.

If Pep Guardiola were to start Marmoush and Haaland together against Galatasaray, he does have the players in his squad to provide them with the service they need to thrive. Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden are ideally suited to creating opportunities for both players, as is Jeremy Doku if he were to start with the pair. Manchester City’s full-backs, Matheus Nunes and Nico O’Reilly, have provided the width for Manchester City this season, and both players can create chances from out wide for Haaland and Marmoush to prosper. The City squad has the tools to unleash Haaland and Marmoush. Whether or not Pep Guardiola decides to start the pair up front remains to be seen.
Manchester City needs to win tomorrow night against Galatasaray. To do that, perhaps Pep Guardiola will start Haaland and Marmoush together to give the side the attacking threat they need to unlock Galatasaray. We haven’t seen Haaland and Marmoush start together for some time, but tomorrow night at the Etihad could be the setting for Pep Guardiola to unleash City’s potentially lethal duo. It is a selection possibility to ponder, if nothing else.
