Willian Arão has undergone surgery to remove a kidney stone and will be sidelined for at least 15 days, ruling him out for Santos in the Paulistão and Brasileiro. According to Diario Do Peixe, the midfielder faces a short spell out following the procedure.

He started and captained the 0-0 draw with Red Bull Bragantino at Neo Química Arena on Sunday, the fifth round of the Paulistão. He was withdrawn at half-time after a renal lithiasis episode.

He was taken to Hospital São Luiz in São Paulo, where a large stone was identified. On advice from specialists and the club’s medical department, he underwent a procedure to remove it. An internal stent will remain for a few days and he will avoid physical activity.

Tests found a stone of almost one centimetre obstructing the urethra and a double J stent was fitted. He thanked the Hospital São Luiz unit in Anália Franco for the care and aims to stay in shape to return quickly.

Signed in July last year, Arão debuted against Flamengo in the Brasileirão, then missed almost three months with a calf oedema. He returned in October, became a regular under Juan Pablo Vojvoda and has started every Paulistão match this season. He has made 18 appearances for Santos.

Santos also have midfielder Gustavo Henrique recovering from an adductor injury, Gabriel Bontempo from a muscular oedema, Barreal from a hip trauma and Thaciano from a posterior thigh oedema.
