Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor has confirmed his international allegiance, publishing a 148-word message to announce he will represent Haiti.
The player said in a post that he would answer the call of the national team, addressing supporters and the Haitian community after months of appeals to join the Grenadiers.
He explained he had taken time to reflect so as to do right by the country and the balance of the team, adding that the flood of messages had moved him deeply.
Isidor said he is proud to be part of the selection and to honour the people and the nation, and spoke of a chance to write history together and share great adventures. He is eager to feel the diaspora’s fervour and to meet supporters soon.
The announcement arrives as Sunderland prepare for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park, one of the most anticipated fixtures of the Premier League season.
