Grêmio have lined up a deal for Weverton, meeting their brief to recruit an experienced goalkeeper, with the expectation that his arrival will steady a position that has troubled the club for years.
According to Globo.com, Palmeiras have allowed him to sign for Grêmio on a free, and a three-season contract proved decisive in the 38-year-old's decision to leave. The club believe he fits the profile to become first choice.
The new board had identified the need to bring in a renowned name for the position. Their decision also reflected an assessment of Tiago Volpi, who slipped down the pecking order after starting last season.
The recent moves underline Volpi’s reduced status. Grêmio pursued Weverton and renewed Gabriel Grando’s deal until the end of 2029. The academy graduate wanted more minutes and was hesitant over an extension, but felt valued by the club.
With Weverton’s arrival, Volpi would become the third option in goal. The club are open to offers, although the player has no intention of leaving. Thiago Beltrame and Gabriel Menegon, both homegrown, are also training with the squad.
The move is intended to draw a line under uncertainty since Marcelo Grohe’s departure in 2019. In that time, 12 goalkeepers have featured without approaching his idol status. Over the past three years, five players for the position were sought.
