Wolfsburg have confirmed the appointment of 61-year-old Dieter Hecking as head coach, sealing his return to the Volkswagen Arena. The club said in a statement that the move follows Daniel Bauer’s departure earlier today.
It is almost 10 years since his first spell at the club, when he delivered the DFB-Pokal in 2015 during a successful three-year tenure.
Hecking said coming back means a lot to him, recalling an intense and successful period and the club’s quality and energy. He added that full focus on the tasks ahead and unity will be vital to remain in the Bundesliga.
Sporting director Pirmin Schwegler said Hecking offers the experience needed, highlighting his knowledge of the club, the surroundings and the demands of the Bundesliga. He believes Hecking’s composure, expertise and clear vision can provide the stability required to achieve the shared goal of staying up.
Hecking’s first game is on Saturday away to third-placed Hoffenheim in Sinsheim. Wolfsburg are 17th in the Bundesliga on 20 points, three behind 15th-placed St. Pauli.
