The scenario: Five teams are still unbeaten in the Bundesliga – now two of them will go head-to-head: Borussia Dortmund, who finished fourth last season, and VfL Wolfsburg, who were 11th. The Black & Yellows have won each of their last seven home games against the Lower Saxony side, conceding only one goal in the process.
Home/away: Borussia were the second most successful home team last season with 11 wins, three draws and three defeats, and have won their last five matches at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK stretching back into last season, scoring at least three goals on each occasion. Wolfsburg occupied fourth position in the away table in 2024/25, winning eight of their 17 away games (and losing only six) and continued in the same vein by starting the season with a 3-1 victory in Heidenheim.
Mohammed Amoura traf beim Sieg der Wolfsburger in Heidenheim per Elfmeter zum 3:1-Endstand.
Head-to-head record: Borussia have lost only one Bundesliga match against Wolfsburg since the 2014/15 season, also recording 17 wins and two draws. In their Bundesliga history, the Lower Saxony outfit have only suffered more defeats (45) and conceded more goals (142) against Bayern Munich than they have against Borussia Dortmund (35 and 123). The Black & Yellows have lost only one home game against VfL in the last 17 years (12 wins, four draws).
BVB statistics: Including last season, the Black & Yellows are unbeaten in 11 Bundesliga matches (nine wins, two draws) and have always scored at least two goals in the process, even netting at least three on nine occasions. Their last defeat came over six months ago in Leipzig (2-0). Under Niko Kovac, Borussia have averaged 2.1 points per game in the Bundesliga – no Dortmund coach has a better record. This season, Guirassy & Co. have the best scoring ratio of any Bundesliga club. From only 33 shots at goal (15 of them by Serhou Guirassy), they have scored eight goals. In 2025/26 to date, BVB have recorded the highest share of possession and played the most passes in open play.
VfL statistics: Like Borussia Dortmund, VfL Wolfsburg are still unbeaten in this Bundesliga season. VfL have five points on the board after three rounds of matches. It could have been even more. VfL have conceded very late goals on both of the last two matchdays. The equaliser for 1-1 against Mainz came in the 90th minute, while against Köln there were two goals after the 90th minute (3-3). Paul Simonis' team have therefore conceded three of their five goals in 2025/26 in stoppage time. Last season, no Bundesliga club scored more set-piece goals than VfL Wolfsburg (19) – a strength that the men from Lower Saxony have also continued under new coach Paul Simonis. After scoring a penalty in Heidenheim, they recently netted twice following free-kicks against Köln.
Last season: In a first period that was balanced and uneventful for long spells, BVB took an early lead in front of the 81,365 spectators at a sold-out SIGNAL IDUNA PARK – through Serhou Guirassy in the third minute of the match – but were not able to put the stamp on the game that they would have hoped for. But that changed after Guirassy scored his second goal in the 59th minute. The shackles came off. Borussia now settled into their flow and increased their lead to 3-0 (69) and 4-0 (73) through substitute Karim Adeyemi.
Biggest home win: The Black & Yellows have improved upon this margin two matches in a row. In April 2022, there was a 6-1 victory; in May 2023, they ran out 6-0 winners: Karim Adeyemi bagged his first Bundesliga brace and assisted another goal. Julian Brandt recorded three assists, amassing three scorer points in a match for the first time in a BVB shirt. In addition to Adeyemi, Jude Bellingham bagged a brace, with Sebastien Haller and Donyell Malen also getting on the scoresheet.Compiled by Boris Rupert
