Manchester United have been given the green light to complete the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha after meeting the terms of his release clause.

Heading into the summer transfer window, bolstering the attacking department was a priority for United and Ruben Amorim after an extremely difficult 2024/25 in front of goal.

In addition to a striker, United were also believed to be keen on signing a player capable of slotting into the number 10 position. There have even been suggestions that the Red Devils want up to two stars for this position.

Cunha emerged as Amorim’s priority target and over the weekend, it emerged that the club reached an agreement with his camp over a five-year contract.

Fabrizio Romano later confirmed than an agreement had been struck with all relevant parties, even sealing the transfer with his famous “here we go” catchphrase.

Earlier this evening, David Ornstein revealed that United had approached Wolves to submit their opening bid for Cunha, who has a £62.5million release clause. Ornstein explained that although United were keen to spread the payment over five years, Wolves insisted it be completed within two years, as outlined in the Brazilian’s terms.

Any concerns that this stumbling block might derail the deal have now been firmly put to rest.

Ornstein has issued a huge update indicating, “Wolverhampton Wanderers have given forward Matheus Cunha to undergo a medical at Manchester United ahead of a proposed summer transfer.”

“United have now met the terms of Cunha’s contract at Molineux and will now seek to complete the transfer of the Brazilian.”

“There had been optimism that agreeing a payment structure will be a formality, with Cunha’s contract outlining that a transfer fee is paid across three instalments — a first lump sum upon the signing and a further two equal shares over the next two years — although United had sought to make the payment over five years rather than two.”

This information has been corroborated by Ben Jacobs.

As things stand, Cunha is set to become United’s first signing of the summer. It’s certainly a positive sign to see the club moving swiftly to get their business done early.
