Wolves have been relegated from the Premier League after eight seasons, and will play in the Championship next season. Confirmation came as survival became mathematically impossible following West Ham United's 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace this evening.
According to Molineux.news, the drop had felt inevitable for weeks. They did briefly revive belief with a three-match unbeaten run, including wins over Aston Villa and Liverpool.
Momentum stalled during the international break, then they were beaten 4-0 by West Ham. That result left relegation possible over the weekend, and while it could have been sealed on Saturday, confirmation arrived two days later.
Wolves then lost 3-0 to Leeds United at Elland Road, which made Tottenham Hotspur v Brighton on Saturday night pivotal. A Spurs victory would have sent them down, and although Spurs led 2-1 in injury time, a last-gasp equaliser from Georginio Rutter kept Wolves alive, just.
That outcome delivered the final blow, and the fact Nuno Espirito Santo applied it has stung many supporters. For others, apathy has set in after a shambolic campaign with only brief highs. An inquest now awaits, with many pointing to poor preparation and inadequate recruitment before a ball was kicked.
