Wolverhampton Wanderers have sacked executive chairman Jeff Shi amid an abysmal season, with the club bottom of the Premier League and facing seemingly inevitable relegation. The decision was taken by Guo Guangchang, chairman of owners Fosun, who is understood to be deeply unhappy with the trajectory.
The club said in a statement that Shi will remain chairman and CEO of Fosun Sports Group but will have no operational role at Wolves.
Shi has long been the focus of fan anger over player sales, poor decisions, managerial churn and limited communication. His recent local radio interview drew more ire, and thousands protested before and during the home game against Manchester United, many remaining outside for the first 15 minutes.
Nathan Shi, no relation, becomes interim chairman. He has worked for Fosun since 2016, and staff were informed on Friday as the club begins the search for a permanent, Molineux-based appointment.
In a farewell message, Jeff Shi said he leaves with gratitude, thanked Fosun and supporters, pledged to back the new management and said his heart remains with the club.
Fosun bought Wolves in 2016, bringing a Championship title, an FA Cup semi-final and a Europa League quarter-final, but the last three seasons have been difficult. New head coach Rob Edwards is still seeking his first point since arriving last month and faces Brentford on Saturday. Wolves have two points and there are fears they could set a Premier League record low, with Derby County’s 2007-08 total at 11.
