Wolves are targeting out-of-contract Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil this summer as they begin a post-relegation rebuild. ExpressAndStar.com reports the 24-year-old is a target for the summer.

Neil, a Sunderland academy graduate with more than 200 appearances, helped the Black Cats climb from League One to the top flight. Game time under Regis Le Bris has been scarce, and he has been on loan at Ipswich Town since January as he chases a second promotion in as many seasons.

Versatile is the recurring theme. Mainly a number eight who links play and drives forward, he has also filled in at full back, and his season-best haul is four.

He debuted in 2018 and became a mainstay from 2021/22, regularly topping 40 appearances per campaign and even captaining the side for a spell. Technically tidy and secure in tight areas, he connects phases well.

Tony Mowbray, who managed him at Sunderland, has praised his progression and said that, if development continues, Neil would undoubtedly play at Premier League level. It has been confirmed he will leave at the end of his contract in the coming months.

Neil has spoken of disappointment at limited Premier League chances this season and says he is determined to return to the division. He added that the summer is uncertain, but he will give 100 per cent to try to help Ipswich win promotion. If Ipswich fall short, this mooted move could yet offer him another route back to the top flight.
