Two more tournament co-hosts in action after Mexico beat South Africa amid flurry of red cards
The World Cup is off and running as Canada and the USA both prepare for their opening matches on day two. The remaining pair of tournament co-hosts playing for the first time means two more opening ceremonies to take place in Toronto and Los Angeles, respectively. First it’s off to BMO Field, where Canada face Bosnia and Herzegovina looking to make a winning start in Group B. Jesse Marsch’s side will hope to earn at least the country’s first-ever point at football’s global tournament after previous finals appearances in 1986 and 2022 both featured a clean sweep of defeats.
They are up against a Bosnia and Herzegovina side led by iconic 40-year-old striker Edin Dzeko, who beat both Wales and Italy on penalties en route to qualifying for their second finals via the UEFA play-offs. The attention then quickly shifts over to SoFI Stadium in California, where the USA take on Paraguay to kick off Group D. Much is expected of Mauricio Pochettino’s USMNT this summer, but they could find it tough against difficult opponents who are full of confidence after reaching the World Cup for the first time since 2010.
Proceedings got underway on Thursday, with Mexico brushing aside South Africa 2-0 in a game that featured three red cards before Group A rivals South Korea came from behind to beat Czechia 2-1 amid scores of empty seats in Guadalajara. England travel to their training base in Kansas City this weekend as they gear up for Wednesday’s Group L opener against Croatia, having beaten Miami United 6-0 in a training friendly to follow their easy win over Costa Rica.
