Switzerland and Algeria lock horns with a Round of 16 spot at stake in Vancouver. The former last won a World Cup knockout stage game in 1938, although they did reach the Round of 16 in four of the last five competitions.
Meanwhile, Algeria are hoping for a first-ever knockout stage victory. The North Africans lost to Germany in 2014 after one of the best goalkeeping performances in the competition's history by Manuel Neuer.
Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel is the one Riyad Mahrez and co. will face in today’s game. Furthermore, Mainz’s captain Silvan Widmer, Gladbach’s center-back Nico Elvedi and Freiburg’s youngster Johan Manzambi are all in Murat Yakin’s starting lineup. The latter has saved Switzerland’s campaign after a false start in the group stage. Stuttgart's Luca Jaquez had his first start against co-hosts Canada, but he's out of the Round of 32 confrontation due to a muscle injury.
As for Vladimir Petković’s Algeria, Wolfsburg’s Mohamed Amoura is still out with a thigh injury. Borussia Dortmund’s Ramy Bensebaini, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Fares Chaïbi and Bayer Leverkusen’s Ibrahim Maza are all in the lineup, similar to the group stage fixtures.
The winners will face either Colombia or Ghana in the Round of 16.
