Sunderland are set for a seven-figure boost this summer as a record 12 players head to the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
According to Sunderland Echo, FIFA’s expanded Club Benefit Programme will distribute around €350 million, with €100 million for qualifying and €250 million for the finals. Clubs are estimated to receive €2,362 per qualifying matchday squad appearance, and regulars such as Noah Sadiki, Granit Xhaka and Omar Alderete have already banked around €20,000 for the club.
FIFA estimates payments of €5,000 per day, per player at the finals. Assuming a minimum of three weeks on duty including preparation, that is about €105,000 per player and roughly £940,000 in total, though the share is likely to be slightly lower than Qatar 2022 given 48 clubs enter the group stage.
Sunderland are guaranteed a payout for each day players are released across the just-over-a-fortnight group stage and the build-up. The total should almost certainly top £1,000,000 once qualification payments are added and if any player advances, with the top two and the eight best third-placed teams progressing.
Xhaka, Alderete, Habib Diarra and Nilson Angulo represent Switzerland, Paraguay, Senegal and Ecuador, while Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku are with DR Congo and Wilson Isidor is with Haiti. Chemsdine Talbi featured in Morocco’s 1-1 draw with Brazil, Simon Adingra was unused as Ivory Coast beat Ecuador 1-0, and Brian Brobbey came on late in the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Japan. Diarra is due to debut against France on Tuesday, with DR Congo facing Portugal on Wednesday.
