The Clarets forward looks unlikely to be at Turf Moor in the Championship.

Burnley's Wout Weghorst will be turning his attention back to club football, following the Netherlands' defeat against England in the Euro 2024 semi-final.

The tall Dutch forward wasn't able to make the impact that he usually does from the bench against the Three Lions on Wednesday night. A late goal from Ollie Watkins sent Weghorst and his team home, and took England to the final of the tournament, where they will face Spain.

Weghorst's impressive bench cameos have reignited interest in him. After a season-long loan spell at Hoffenheim, the 31-year-old was set to return to Lancashire, but there are now European clubs vying for his signature, partially because of the role that he played in getting the Netherlands to the semi-final of the Euros.

Now that his tournament has ended, his full focus will return to club football and the upcoming season; one in which he will not be with Scott Parker's side, according to the latest reports.

Advanced talks with Ajax

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has stated that the striker had been in talks with the former Dutch league champions over personal terms, as part of a move that would see him join Ajax permanently.

These talks were reported to be at an advanced stage, as per Romano, and Ajax were said to be increasingly confident about their chances of landing the 31-year-old this summer.

There has been interest from other parts of Holland too. FC Twente are hoping that they might be the club that Weghorst joins, if he does return to his native country, as per ESPN. Their manager, Joseph Oosting, actually claimed that the forward wants to come and play for his club, it's just about whether Twente would be able to work a deal with Burnley.

Roma interest

The Italian capital could be the next home of Weghorst, as Tuttosport reported, via LaRoma24, that he is someone that has caught the attention of those at AS.

The Clarets are said to want €10 million (£8.5 million) for the former Besiktas and Woflsburg man, but they are also believed to be willing to negotiate on that valuation.

Danielle De Rossi's side are a bit lighter in the striker department after Romelu Lukaku returned to Chelsea following his season-long loan spell with the club. They seem to see Weghorst as a potential replacement for the Belgian's 13 goals from last season.

Weghorst's contract situation

One of the reasons why the Dutchman is seen as a more attractive option this summer than maybe previously, other than his performance in Germany over the summer, is because he is into the final year of the two-and-a-half-year deal he signed in January 2022.

Burnley are likely to lose him for free next summer, unless they sell him, which makes them more open to a lower offer than what his traditional market value would be.

Capology estimates that the 31-year-old earns £35,000 per week at the moment.

He has been on loan for much of the time that Turf Moor has been the base of his parent club, so Burnley wouldn't have had to pay him that level of money across the two-and-a-half-years that he's been with them, but, for the amount he's played for them, that's a hefty chunk of money that has left the club.
