Wrexham’s attempt to tease Liverpool on X backfired ahead of their New York friendly, leaving the Welsh club red-faced. Wales Online reports that a playful reply from the Red Dragons missed the mark.

Liverpool had shared a video of the Empire State Building lit in red and referenced the Reds. Wrexham’s account hinted the tribute might be for them, complete with eyes emoji, but the illumination was promoting Liverpool’s new away kit.

Reds supporters swiftly piled in, mocking the timing and tone of Wrexham’s post, with some noting the building’s own account had clarified the reason.

On the pitch, Wrexham’s pre-season has begun brightly. They beat Manchester United 1-0 in Helsinki thanks to a first-half strike from Sam Smith, then came from behind to defeat Leeds United 3-2 in Tampa, Florida.

Co-owner Ryan Reynolds said he was thrilled to face Liverpool in New York, five years after he and Rob McElhenney bought the club while it was in the National League. He highlighted the chance to play three Premier League opponents across Tampa, New York and Philadelphia, and spoke of Wrexham’s long history of upsets, saying they cannot wait to see a full stadium and test themselves on a major stage.
