According to Sunderland Echo, Wrexham are trying to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, exploring both permanent and loan options. The 26-year-old could be available for around £seven million.
Wrexham may pay a fee, though a straight loan or an initial loan with an option or obligation to buy is preferred. Patterson is expected to leave after falling behind Robin Roefs, yet he is training with the senior group at the Academy of Light.
Millwall are keen to bring him back to The Den following his successful loan in the second half of last season. The Lions signed him in February after he had managed only one senior appearance earlier in the campaign.
The reported valuation has discouraged Rangers from advancing their interest. Wolverhampton Wanderers have considered a move, but would need to offload a goalkeeper before approaching Sunderland.
Patterson sat on the senior bench in 2018-19, then debuted in an EFL Trophy defeat at Fleetwood Town in November 2020. A 2021-22 loan at Notts County ended with a recall, after which he became first choice and helped Sunderland beat Wycombe Wanderers in the League One play-offs at Wembley. Three years later he made two key saves against Sheffield United at Wembley as Régis Le Bris’ side won 2-1 to earn promotion to the Premier League, before Roefs’ emergence limited his minutes and led to a temporary switch to Millwall.
