Manchester United’s Melvine Malard leads the WSL Golden Boot race
The WSL Golden Boot race is heating up as we approach the midway point in the season, with six players leading the charge on four or more goals.
1. Melvine Malard – 5 (Manchester United)
=2. Stina Blackstenius – 4 (Arsenal)
=2. Jess Park – 4 (Manchester United)
=2. Khadija Shaw – 4 (Manchester City)
=2. Aggie Beever-Jones – 4 (Arsenal)
=2. Ornella Vignola – 4 (Everton)
Manchester United’s Melvine Malard is leading the Golden Boot race this season with five goals to her name in seven games.
Malard scored a brace in both of her first two games this season as United got their season off to a quick start with convincing wins against Leicester and London City Lionesses.
While the winger has been playing well in the past two months, Malard’s scoring production slowed down in October.
The French star netted her fifth of the season against Everton before the international break and she gained some momentum while away with her country with a goal against Germany.
Malard leads the WSL scoring charts but there are five other players trailing behind the 25-year-old. With five goals this season, Malard has already matched her previous best scoring tally for a single season.
The only Arsenal player in the top six WSL scorers this season is Stina Blackstenius.
The midfielder wasn’t favoured by Renee Slegers at the start of the season and had no choice but to play off the bench.
However in recent weeks Blackstenius has proved to be an essential part of Arsenal’s attack and she has given the Gunners another dimension in attack.
The Swedish star had three goal contributions in Arsenal’s last league game against Leicester with two goals and an assist.
Blackstenius is averaging 1.38 goals per game this season in the WSL – the best scoring average of any player in the league.
Although she has struggled for starts in the league, on current form there is no doubt that Blackstenius will play an important role against Chelsea this weekend.
Manchester United signed Jess Park from across the city in summer and the youngster is already proving to be one of the best bargain’s of the year.
After a quiet start to life in Manchester, Park has exploded into action in the last month.
Park netted her first goal for United in a 5-1 win against London City Lionesses in September.
However, it is Park’s last two games that have been turning heads in England’s top flight. The 21-year-old was named player of the match in back to back wins against Everton and Brighton after picking up four goal contributions in just 129 minutes.
Park was named WSL player of the month for October following her good run of form.
United have a difficult run coming up and they will need Park firing on all cylinders against the likes of PSG, Manchester City and Wolfsburg.
There is no surprise that two-time WSL Golden Boot winner Khadija Shaw is once again amongst the top scorers this season.
Shaw experienced an uncharacteristically slow start to her campaign but in the last month she has really kicked into gear.
The Jamaican forward netted two from the penalty spot against London City Lionesses at the end of September and followed up with a crucial goal to beat Arsenal a week later.
Her four goals are enough to provide Shaw with some confidence as we approach the midway point in the season, but she will be hoping to improve to finish the campaign.
With 12 goals last season and 21 the year before, Shaw has higher expectations than anyone else in the league.
If she was to win a third Golden Boot in the WSL the City striker would become the first player to ever win the award in three different campaigns.
After a fast start to the season, Chelsea’s Aggie Beever-Jones has slowed down in the WSL over the last few weeks.
The 22-year-old was named Player of the Month for the first time in her carer after an impressive September.
Beever-Jones became the first player in Chelsea history to score in all four of the club’s first games of the season, but since September her production has slowed down to a complete stop.
With Sam Kerr returning to full health, Beever-Jones’ position is under threat and she will be hoping to turn her form around sooner rather than later.
The England striker did score for the Lionesses on international duty at the end of October and she will be hoping that goal can give her confidence back on domestic duty.
Chelsea face Arsenal this weekend in an all-important top of the table clash and a goal from Beever-Jones would go a long way in their title charge.
Everton striker Ornella Vignola holds an advantage over the rest of the scorers on this list, as she is the only player to have scored a hat-trick in the WSL this season.
The Spaniard scored her three goals in the most important of games for Everton.
Vignola’s hat-trick came on her Toffees debut at Goodison Park, against bitter rivals Liverpool.
The Toffees have been a mixed bag of form this year and Vignola’s own scoring form has taken a dip as a result.
Everton’s summer signing has scored just one since her derby day hat-trick and with a difficult run coming up, Vignola may struggle in November.
