Crystal Palace take big step forward in bid to avoid relegation

Scorers: Nouwen 33', Weerden 53', Stengel 90+5'; Parker 85'

Crystal Palace secured a 3-1 win over fellow relegation candidates Aston Villa.

The Eagles took the lead from a corner, Aniek Nouwen delivering a pin-point header to find the back of the net.

Their advantage was doubled early in the second half when Ashleigh Weerden let fly from the edge of the box, her shot slamming beyond Aston Villa 'keeper Shae Yáñez.

Lucy Parker pulled one back for Villa with five minutes remaining, but a stoppage time goal for Katie Stengel ensured that the home side took all three points.

That result closes the gap between these two sides at the bottom of the table to just two points.

Brighton see off Tottenham

Scorers: Kirby 42'

A Fran Kirby strike was enough for Brighton to pull off a 1-0 win away at Tottenham.

Brighton took the lead just before half-time, when Rachel McLauchlan unselfishly pulled the ball back to Fran Kirby in the box, and the WSL veteran duly  smashed home her finish.

The result helped the Seagulls leapfrog Liverpool into fifth place, while Spurs remain in seventh.

Arsenal take on Real Madrid in the first leg of the UWCL quarter-final in midweek, while Chelsea travel to Manchester City in a repeat of Saturday's final.
