After Brighton bagged a 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Saturday, the other 10 WSL sides are in action on Sunday.

Here’s what went down.

Chelsea overcome early controversy to rout Tottenham

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd was in sensational form for Chelsea as Sonia Bompastor’s side beat Spurs by a 5-2 scoreline.

The Blues got off to a great start when Guro Reiten won the ball back high up the pitch, drove to the by-line and pulled the ball back for Maika Hamano to fire home.

Things then took a controversial turn when a swerving shot from Amanda Nildén gave goalkeeper Hannah Hampton some problems, and the referee blew up for a goal.

Chelsea were furious, and it certainly seemed like the ball had not crossed the line, while Hampton was shown a yellow card for her protests.

It wasn’t long before things swung back in Chelsea’s favour though, as Nildén attempted to head Reiten’s dangerous inswinging corner clear, but ended up diverting it into the back of the net.

With 20 minutes of normal time remaining, the Blues really turned up the heat, and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd fired in a stunning scissor kick on the volley to put daylight between them and their opponent.

Three became four when Chelsea were awarded a penalty, and when Reiten smashed the spot-kick against the post, Sandy Baltimore was there to convert the rebound.

Spurs pulled one back when Eveliina Summanen curled in a free-kick, her effort sneaking in at Hampton’s near post.

As the match headed into added time, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd scored yet another stunning effort as she got to the by-line and instead of delivering a cross, smashed home from what seemed to be an impossible angle.

Professional Arsenal performance sees off West Ham

Scorers: Caldentey 71′ (PEN), Kafaji 89′

Arsenal kept pace at the top with a hard-fought 2-0 win over West Ham.

Interim boss Renée Slegers’ side were struggling to break West Ham down for long periods of the game, but a clumsy challenge in the box from Amber Tysiak on Stina Blackstenius gave the Gunners a chance to open the scoring when the referee awarded a penalty.

Up stepped Mariona Caldentey, who coolly converted the spot-kick with minimal run-up.

The Gunners sealed the points with just a minute of normal time remaining as a cross from Blackstenius was met with a top-class finish from Rosa Kafaji with the outside of her boot.

Hemp stars for Man City as they come back to beat Villa

Scorers: Nunes 20′; Hemp 62′, Roord 70′

Manchester City put on a second half show to cancel out Aston Villa’s advantage with a 2-1 win.

Yet while the home side controlled the possession in the opening 20 minutes, they lacked a cutting edge to their play.

Aston Villa took advantage with a quick counter-attack as Kirsty Hanson showed great pace and strength down the left wing to get her cross into the box, and Gabi Nunes netted her first Villa goal by getting in front of the defender and guiding the ball into the net.

Into the second half, and Lauren Hemp was making things happen all over the pitch, so it was somewhat inevitable when the England winger was the one to get Man City level as she gave herself some space by heading the ball into the air and hooking her shot beyond Sabrina D’Angelo.

Hemp then went from scorer to provider as some determined work and a sharp burst of pace down the left wing allowed her to pull back the ball for Jill Roord, who scored her first goal since coming back from a lengthy ACL injury.

Liverpool held at home to Crystal Palace

Liverpool came back to earn a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, their third stalemate in their opening five games of the season.

Crystal Palace took a shock lead when Katie Stengel netted against her former side, finishing on the rebound after the ball had pinged around the box.

Yet the Reds regained their composure and a quick breakaway move led to Cornelia Kapocs stealing the ball on the edge of the area and then blast a powerful angled shot beyond goalkeeper Shae Yanez.

Leicester overcome Everton to take first win of the campaign

Scorers: Momiki 8′

Leicester recorded their first win of the season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Everton.

The Foxes took the lead through a sublime effort from Yuka Momiki, as she nutmegged a defender inside the penalty area before slotting the ball beyond Courtney Brosnan.

After taking a break next weekend, the WSL action resumes on Sunday November 3rd with Manchester United hosting Arsenal.
