Xabi Alonso has been dismissed by Real Madrid after Sunday’s 3-2 Spanish Super Cup final defeat to Barcelona in Saudi Arabia.
The club said in a statement on Monday that he had left by mutual agreement, adding that he is regarded as a club legend who embodied their values and that Real Madrid would always be his home.
Álvaro Arbeloa, coach of Real Madrid Castilla, will take charge of the first team on a permanent basis rather than as an interim.
He has led Castilla since June 2025, having worked in the academy since 2020. He managed Infantil A in 2020-2021, winning the league, Cadete A in 2021-2022, then Juvenil A from 2022 to 2025, lifting a treble in 2022-2023 and the league in 2024-2025.
Alonso’s reign began on 1 June last year and lasted seven months and five days. He oversaw 34 matches, with 24 wins, four draws and six defeats, and did not fully convince sections of the support.
In LaLiga, Madrid sit second, four points behind leaders Barcelona. In the UEFA Champions League league phase, they are seventh on 12 points, six behind Arsenal, with two fixtures remaining.
