Youri Tielemans: Man United’s reaction to deal with Aston Villa unveiled

An inside source at Old Trafford has described Manchester United’s successful acquisition of Youri Tielemans as a “brilliant signing”, while Aston Villa’s reaction to losing their talismanic midfielder only confirms this view, a new report by The Athletic reveals.

Right Time, Right Place

Having turned down the opportunity to sign Tielemans three times – once in 2019, again in 2022, and a final time as a free agent in 2023 – one well-placed observer describes how the “stars aligned” for the fourth time to be the charm.

United were intending to sign Atalanta enforcer Ederson once his World Cup in North America, along with Casemiro and Matheus Cunha, came to an end. Instead, a deal for the eighth Belgian to arrive at Old Trafford was prioritised, while a failed medical put an end to the Brazilian’s switch to M16.

The Red Devils are understood to have waited until their pursuit of Tielemans was confirmed before pulling the plug on their £39 million deal with Atalanta. The Bergamo side wholeheartedly reject the assertion that Ederson has a long-term knee injury, moving to offer him a five-year contract extension in response.

Having signed Tielemans as a free agent from Leicester City in 2023, Aston Villa had been forced to accept a secret £35 million release clause in the 29-year-old’s contract. This was kept under lock and key to such an extent that, as The Athletic reveals, not even a “key figure who worked on the agreement” to bring Tielemans to Villa Park knew about it.

Yet, through continued dialogue with the player’s camp, United became aware of it, moving quickly and decisively to trigger it last week. There was interest from another Premier League side, as well as clubs in Saudi Arabia, making speed a priority.

Once United had triggered the release clause, there was nothing Villa could do to rebuff interest from a direct rival, despite being willing to offer him improved terms. Tielemans is understood to consider the Theatre of Dreams a ‘dream’ move from his childhood.

There was some surprise from industry insiders at the five-year contract he has signed, given he turns 30 next season and was not on cheap wages at Villa Park. After breaking through at Anderlecht as a teenage protégé, he has amassed 668 appearances at club and international level, meaning he has played more football than the average 29-year-old.

Yet others insist his quality on the pitch, and his leadership and work ethic off it, mean the relatively low fee offsets these concerns. They believe the overall cost of the transfer is still low considering his quality and experience, with him representing “no risk” – a “brilliant signing”, one source at Old Trafford says.

Major blow for Aston Villa

As a “sign of respect”, Tielemans is said to have maintained constant communication with Aston Villa throughout the process, wanting negotiations to be conducted “cleanly and correctly”. Prior to speaking to United, he phoned Unai Emery to tell his manager “how he felt and that he wanted to speak with his suitors.”

The Spanish tactician is described as “sad to be losing one of his most trusted lieutenants” by The Athletic, but was appreciative of the decision to join one of Europe’s biggest clubs. Tielemans’ representatives then spoke to Villa’s director of football, Damian Vidagany, who mirrored Emery’s sentiments.

“At 29, as those close to the player stated, this may have been the final opportunity for Tielemans to move to United — ‘this train will only pass once,’ a source said. Having signed his contract, Tielemans asked his personal team to put together a leaving video, thanking Villa supporters and the club,” the report states.

The Villans are gutted to be losing their midfield maestro; the conductor who made the rest of the team tick. He was essential to their Europa League triumph last season, scoring a sensational volley in the 3-0 rout over SC Freiburg in the final, while his performances in the Champions League the year prior proved Europe’s elite was his level.

Following that superb 2024/25 campaign, where he swept the club’s end-of-season awards, one Villa employee revealed: “He’s just so good. What a player.” It is a view shared across one half of Birmingham, or even both, if Birmingham fans were forced to give their honest appraisal.

Final Thoughts

After missing out on West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes following Tottenham Hotspur’s £85 million hijack, Manchester United have instead spent the same amount on Tielemans and Chelsea dynamo Andrey Santos, signed for a fee totalling £50 million. Tottenham Hotspur have also signed Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for £100 million, while the Magpies are quoting a similar fee if Arsenal want to bring Bruno Guimaraes to the Emirates this summer.

These exorbitant valuations make the £35 million capture of Tielemans from a Champions League rival look like the deal of the century. Across virtually any metric, the Belgium international stands up to any of those players; in many, he exceeds them. A ‘brilliant signing’ indeed.
