Former Italy goalkeeper Walter Zenga congratulates Unai Simón on breaking his World Cup record, but reminds he did it in a single World Cup.
Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón set a new World Cup record in Spain’s 3-0 win over Austria on Thursday as the match allowed him to remain unbeaten in 519 consecutive minutes across the past two World Cups.
The previous record belonged to ex-Italy star Zenga, who remained unbeaten for 517 consecutive minutes during Italia 90.
“The records are made to be beaten. It had to happen sooner or later,” Zenga told RSI Sport in Switzerland, where he commented on Spain’s game as a pundit.
“I’m happy I kept the record for 36 years. That was set in just the World Cup, by the way, not across two, but it’s fine anyway. I’m happy I’ve had this satisfaction for 36 years.
“Nobody in Italy remembers it, nobody cares,” Zenga, a former Inter star, added, smiling.
“The goalkeepers’ unbeaten record tends to fade into the background, but if one scores 10 or 12 goals… they talk about goal records. People never talk about the goalkeepers.”
