Personnel matters Nico Schlotterbeck (substitute) and captain Emre Can (starting line-up) were back and alleviated the player shortage in defence. There was only one change to the team from the first leg (2-0), with the experienced Can replacing youngster Luca Reggiani.
The matchAtalanta attacked Dortmund's right-back position relentlessly from the start, creating their first chance after just four minutes through Nicola Zalewski (Gregor Kobel saved the shot from a tight angle). They then scored to make it 1-0 with their next attack as Lorenzo Bernasconi's cross was converted by Gianluca Scamacca (5).
Atalanta played man-to-man and brought a high level of intensity to the pitch. The result was that they had more possession and won more tackles. Borussia, dressed entirely in yellow, tried to maintain their structure, fought and ran, but they were often chasing shadows. Despite pressure from Anton, Scamacca was able to hold onto the ball in the penalty area and pass it across to Zaleweski, whose powerful shot from the edge of the area was stopped by the strong Kobel (24).
Borussia had not had any long passing sequences up to that point. At least the game was more balanced after the early goal, despite the big chance described above to make it 2-0. Dortmund became stronger in challenges and created their first chances as a result, with Serhou Guirassy heading Maximilian Beier's cross just wide from the right corner of the six-yard box (27) and Beier playing a ball through to Julian Brandt, whose shot was saved by goalkeeper Carnesecchi's foot (29). It looked like it would be 1-0 at half-time, but Atalanta attacked down the left again, Bernasconi crossed sharply into the box, Kobel punched the ball away, but Zappacosta reacted quicker than Bellingham and shot from just outside the area. Bensebaini unfortunately deflected the ball past Kobel (45), meaning the 2-0 lead from the first leg was already gone by half-time.
BVB continued to make too many simple mistakes in their build-up play after the break and too often made the wrong decisions, but Atalanta were also vulnerable. Guirassy forced Carnesecchi into a brilliant save. The offside flag went up, but a goal would probably have stood after a VAR review. At the other end, Kobel continued to be the saviour in the last line of defence.
The first ten minutes after the break were an open affair with both sides looking vulnerable in defence. Julian Ryerson sent Beier down the right wing, but he couldn't find a teammate to pass to, so he took a shot himself and hit the left post (54). Shortly after that, Mario Pasalic headed in de Roon's cross from the left to make it 3-0 (57). Kovac reacted by bringing on Fabio Silva and Carney Chukwuemeka for Beier and Brandt (60). And because not much changed, Yan Couto and Karim Adeyemi came on for Ryerson and Bellingham ten minutes later.
It was now a completely new game. BVB still needed a goal to take the game into extra time and couldn't afford to concede another. Guirassy and Silva had the chance to make it 1-3 in the 74th minute, but seconds later Adeyemi turned the ball into the far corner with a delicate shot. Adeyemi had created the goal himself and finished it off after a one-two with Chukwuemeka (who had brilliantly set up the Guirassy-Silva double chance seconds earlier).
The belief was back. Adeyemi played the ball deep and Guirassy narrowly missed his cross (81). While Atalanta switched to a back four, BVB pushed for a second goal but were caught out by a dangerous counter-attack, which Kobel failed to clear. Bensebaini raised his foot quite high to clear the cross in the penalty area with his heel, but in doing so connected with Nikola Krstovic's head, which was quite low. The Atalanta player's bleeding wound led to a VAR check, a red card for Schlotterbeck (on the bench), a second yellow card for Bensebaini and a last-minute penalty, which was converted by Lazar Samardzic (90+8).
OutlookFor BVB, the Bundesliga continues on Saturday with the derby against FC Bayern Munich. Kick-off at the sold-out SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is at 18:30 CET.
