With Robert Lewandowski entering the final year of his contract and considering his age, FC Barcelona are looking for a long-term successor and have been linked with several top forwards in recent months. One of the names that has generated the most excitement among fans is the Argentine striker Julian Alvarez.
Although Alvarez is contracted to Atletico Madrid until 2030, he has not fully settled at the capital club and has struggled with their style of play this season. Despite scoring 11 goals and providing five assists, he has been frustrated by Atletico’s inability to consistently dominate matches.
Against this backdrop, Alvarez recently appeared in an interview with streamer Davoo Xeneize and made a comment that caught the attention of Barcelona supporters, saying, “For me, Pedri, without a doubt, is one of the best players in the world.”
Given his continued links with Barcelona, SPORT claims the remarks could be interpreted as a subtle nod toward the Catalan club and its fans.
Alvarez has previously expressed admiration for Barcelona, but he has remained careful about discussing his future out of respect for Atlético. The club paid €75 million to sign him from Manchester City and is officially not looking to sell, although reports suggest they might consider offers starting at €100 million. This is above what Barcelona are currently willing to pay, particularly given their financial limitations.
Interest in Alvarez is not limited to Spain. In England, both Arsenal and Chelsea have reportedly explored the possibility of signing him, with his agent recently visiting the UK. However, the €100 million-rated Argentine forward appears to favor a move to Barcelona over the Premier League, fully aware of the challenges posed by the club’s financial situation.
Barcelona’s pursuit of Alvarez is closely tied to Lewandowski’s future. Should the Pole leave, it would free up significant salary cap space, enabling the club to make a high-profile signing under La Liga’s 1:1 rule.
While Alvarez remains a priority, the club is also monitoring alternatives in case Atletico refuses to sell or the price escalates due to competition from English clubs. For now, it remains to be seen whether the Argentine would don the blue and garnet shirt next season.
